Friday, November 1, 2019 - Sunday, November 3, 2019 7:00 pm - 3:30 pm
The Wisdom Centre and Hillhurst United invite you to join us November 1-3, 2019 for a three-day event with Brian McLaren.
Friday, November 1, 7:00 pm Public Lecture at Knox United Church (506 4 Street SW, Calgary). Re-Wilding Christianity: We know that Jesus’ greatest sermon took place outdoors. In fact, most of his ministry took place outside of buildings (and when he went into the temple, things didn’t go so well!) What would it mean for us to rediscover Christian faith as an outdoor religion again, wild rather than domesticated, reconnecting us with soil, sun, wind, water, and wilderness?
Saturday, November 2, 9:30-3:30 pm All day event at Mount Royal University (Lincoln Room). Should I Stay Christian?: Some say the “brand” is ruined beyond repair. Others say we can’t abandon Christianity to fundamentalism. How do we negotiate Christian identity in light of our past history and in light of present challenges? How can we make this a moment of fresh opportunity?
Sunday, November 3 Brian will be preaching at both the 9:05 am and the 10:45 am services at Hillhurst United (1227 Kensington Close NW, Calgary). His sermon will also be shown on video at the 10 am service at St. Laurence Anglican Church (5940 Lakeview Drive SW, Calgary).
There will also be a ‘pre-event’ at Hillhurst United on Friday, November 1 from 9:30-3:30. YYC Church-Does church matter or not? Ten speakers from church and non-church backgrounds have ten minutes to answer the question – Why church? Or, why not church? How is church relevant or irrelevant today? Confirmed speakers include Calgary blogger Mike Morrison and CBC Radio host David Gray, as well as leaders from United, Presbyterian, Anglican, and Evangelical churches in Alberta. Each presenter will end with a short Q and A.
Friday afternoon pre-event only (Brian not attending) – $25
