The Wisdom Centre is pleased to announce that Matthew Wright will be with us in April 17-20, 2018 for a three-night retreat at King’s Fold Retreat Centre. Matthew Wright is a priest in the Episcopal Church, working to renew Christian contemplative and transformative wisdom within a wider inter-spiritual framework. He is coming to King’s Fold to share his heart-centred wisdom over the course of four days. Together, we will explore the Gospel of Thomas, the 2000-year-old non-canonical text that features short sayings of Jesus (similar to kōans) which are often used today in the practice of lectio divina. We’ll also spend time with another early text, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, re-evaluating Mary’s apostolic authority within the life of the early Church. Matthew will lead us through the ways these early Wisdom texts can help reorient Christianity for a global, inter-spiritual age. This is an unusual opportunity to reflect on the divine within and around us, and will be held in a rhythm of teaching, chanting and silent mediation practice.
On Friday, April 20th at 7:30 pm, Matthew will be giving a public lecture at St. Laurence Anglican Church. Opening the Eye of the Heart: Jesus and Unitive Wisdom. This public talk will explore the unitive and contemplative wisdom at the heart of the teachings of Jesus. Together we’ll look at the ways Christianity has lost sight of its own contemplative heritage and how it is being recovered today. Close attention will be given to the recovery of early Christian Wisdom literature, particularly the Gospels of Thomas and Mary Magdalene.
